Vivre une occupation militaire, c'est vivre avec l’ennemi. Les contributions ici réunies proposent de redécouvrir ces occupations, en 14-18 comme en 39-45 ou durant les sorties de guerre, en France et en Belgique comme en Pologne, en Afrique centrale ou en Allemagne. Entre dialogue et rapport de force, occupants et occupés s’adaptent à une coexistence imposée par le sort des armes.
Les expériences françaises et belges de la Grande Guerre montrent d’abord des occupés pris entre normes de conduite collectives – imposant une distance avec l’occupant – et stratégies d’accommodation individuelle – pouvant conduire au rapprochement. De ces tensions et des souffrances de l’occupation émerge une mémoire complexe aux multiples déclinaisons locales.
À une échelle plus vaste, les occupations s’avèrent en outre liées entre elles par de multiples transferts. Quels que soient la période et le lieu, les occupations passées ou éloignées contribuent ainsi à nourrir le face-à-face entre occupants et occupés
