Georges Laguerre, un Bel-Ami en politique (1858-1912)

Emerging on a few rare occasions from the depths of national history, his name, long forgotten by all, would lead one to think that the man had passed through history in the deepest anonymity. However, during his lifetime, Georges Laguerre (1858-1912) enjoyed real notoriety, both politically and professionally. A young prodigy at the Paris bar, he became France's youngest deputy at the age of 25 and was promised a glorious political future. "The Prince of Paris" as some people liked to call him, could already see himself rising to the highest offices of the State. Nevertheless, “if nature had provided him with precious gifts, man, by faults easily avoided, would have destroyed them and, by the same token, refused his destiny” (Maurice Barrès). Does his career, as intense as it was short-lived, and largely disrupted by his Boulangist convictions, not symbolise the abyss that separates the “statesman” from the mere 'professional' in politics?
