Philippe de Vigneulles (1471-1528) was an unusual character: a villager who became a merchant, he was a writer and historian, but also the first French memorialist. His testimony allows us to understand the urban culture of his time, between the Middle Ages and modernity, in a free city, the one that was then called the wealthy city of Metz.
As the largest French-speaking city in the Holy Roman Empire, Metz was the focus of a rich and original urban culture, of which some fifteen chronicles have survived. By bringing together an international group of specialists from different disciplines around the work of Philippe de Vigneulles, this book proposes literary, linguistic and historical studies that echo each other to renew the study of this exceptional urban historiography.
