La révolte des Gueux

en Flandre, Artois et Hainaut

Histoire et civilisations

From 1565 till 1569, a major rebellion took hold of the Flandre, Hainaut and Artois provinces. Noblemen came together and militated against the policies led by the king of Spain, Philip II, and his ministers. Soon, the rebels were given the nickname "Les Gueux" (or beggars), a derogatory term which they yet proudly reclaimed. Meanwhile, the “sectaires”, the name given to the then ever increasing number of Protestants, sacked about 400 churches in a few days. This came to be known as the iconoclasm characteristic of 1566 or “l'année des Merveilles” (literally, the “year of wonders”, an appellation deriving from the deeply unexpected nature of the events). “Vive les Gueux” or “long live the Gueux” became the rallying call of those contesting the established power and the mighty in Flandre and in the cities of Valenciennes and Cateau-Cambrésis.
Philip II refused to sign a covenant with the rebels and rejected the coexistence of the new religion with Catholicism. He sent off the elite troops of the Spanish army, led by the duke of Alba, to punish the “Flamencos.” Sword, rope and fire led to the deaths of hundreds of rebels. The count of Edgmont was beheaded. Thousands of families fled and were condemned to a lifelong banishment and lost their properties.
Based on sixteenth-century archive documents, manuscripts and printings as well as contemporary academic works, Alain Lottin charts this tragic chapter of history, which is often forgotten in France, in a book lavishly illustrated with engravings, drawings, maps and gouaches of the period.
