Au-delà d'une analyse de la démocratie participative comme réponse à la crise de la démocratie représentative, cet ouvrage prête attention à la multiplicité des collectifs et mouvements d’expérimentations et d’interpellation citoyenne, tout en interrogeant leur nouveauté, et questionne leurs rapports aux institutions. Il le fait en mobilisant des analyses portant sur une diversité de situations, tant en France qu’à l’étranger : centres sociaux en France et en Espagne, campagnes électorales au Brésil, associations de patients en Belgique, occupation de friches urbaines, magasins gratuits, mobilisations de travailleurs « informels » en Argentine, participation à Nuit Debout ou mobilisation environnementale, pratiques d’aide alimentaire…

Les enjeux soulevés redistribuent les débats sur le politique, la citoyenneté et ses pratiques, réinterrogent l’égalité et la justice sociale, mettent l’accent sur la démocratie comme forme de vie. Les expérimentations analysées ici contribuent, chacune à leur manière, aux luttes sur ce que « faire société » et participer veulent dire.
