L’échec de Louis, le caractère non officiel de cette expédition condamnée par la papauté, et la disparition relative de cet épisode dans la mémoire collective contribuent à expliquer le peu d’intérêt qui lui a été accordé depuis le XIXe siècle. Pourtant, ce moment interroge des aspects importants de l’histoire de l’Europe au Moyen Âge dans le premier quart du XIIIe siècle, et met en question la vision binaire d’une confrontation entre Plantagenêts et Capétiens, trop longtemps entretenue par l’historiographie. C’est à une analyse fine de l’expédition et de son contexte, dans une perspective transrégionale de la recomposition des pouvoirs dans le nord-ouest de l’Europe, qu’invitent les contributions réunies dans le présent volume. 02 00 En mai 1216, à l'appel des barons anglais, Louis de France, fils de Philippe Auguste, s'embarque pour l'Angleterre dans le but de prendre le trône au roi Jean sans Terre. Les articles réunis dans le présent volume reviennent sur cet épisode méconnu de l’histoire : l’invasion oubliée de l’Angleterre par l’héritier de la Couronne de France. 03 00 In May 1216, almost two years after the great victory at Bouvines, Louis, son of Philip Augustus, set sail for England with several thousand men, responding to the call of the barons who had revolted against King John. Louis's failure, the unofficial nature of his expedition—which was condemned by the papacy—and the relative disappearance of this episode from collective memory help to explain the scant attention it has received since the 19th century. Yet this event raises important questions about the history of medieval Europe in the first quarter of the 13th century, and challenges the binary view of a confrontation between the Plantagenets and the Capetians, a perspective long perpetuated by historiography. The contributions brought together in this volume provide a detailed analysis of the expedition and its context, from a transregional perspective on the realignment of power in north-western Europe: the methods of recruitment for Louis's army, the political context of relations on both sides of the Channel – exemplified by the honour and the county of Boulogne – and the maritime and port context are examined using previously unpublished research. 02 00 In May 1216, invited by the English barons, Louis of France, son of Philip Augustus, set sail for England with the aim of seizing the throne from King John.
