How do authoritarian regimes endure through time? By analyzing the case of Omar al-Bashir's regime in Sudan—which lasted thirty years despite multiple civil wars, international isolation, and waves of protest—this book explores how authoritarian rule is reaffirmed and adjusted daily through development practices. Based on fieldwork conducted in Khartoum and the peripheral region of Kordofan, it demonstrates how encouraging participation in development projects can lead citizens to unwittingly contribute to the mechanisms of their own domination. By shedding light on how authoritarianism unfolds across time and space, this work also provides insights into the revolution that overthrew the regime in 2019 and the armed conflict that erupted in 2023.
