Between 1840 and 1940, scholars, archaeologists, historians, writers, and artists from France, Italy, and England explored Etruria and devoted themselves to uncovering the necropolises, frescoes, and artifacts of the ancient Etruscan civilization, thereby contributing to its reconstruction – and at times even to its reinvention. In engaging with these material remains, authors such as Anatole France, Gabriele D'Annunzio, and Aldous Huxley produced reports, travel journals, poems, historical novels, and short stories in which diverse discourses and approaches intersect and interact in an effort to make sense of a heritage perceived as irreducibly mysterious and enigmatic. This book examines how these multiple readings and interpretations intertwined to shape a plural and ever-changing portrait of Etruria and the Etruscans, thus revealing not only the epistemological interactions between history, archaeology, art, and literature, but also the socio-cultural dynamics that shaped the reception, representation, and reinvention of Etruscan antiquity in early twentieth-century Europe.
