Des habits pour étudier

Le vêtement scolaire (XVIe-XXIe siècles)
First Edition

This book lays the groundwork for current thinking on the possibility of uniforms in schools. Read More

In the media spotlight since the start of the 2023 school year, the uniform is in fact a political question posed over a long period of time. The core of this collective work is based on the desire to question pre-existing thinking, in different historical contexts, on asking schoolchildren and students to wear distinctive clothing, or on the contrary, not to promote it.

Historians, anthropologists and jurists, assisted by curators, analyze administrative and normative sources (laws, school bylaws), cross-referencing them with other documentary collections, particularly iconographic, to establish school clothing as a "total fact" reflecting a conception of learning, the child's body and the schoolchild's place in the society in question.
