Between 1890 and 1965, the Salon des artistes lille hosted more than a thousand painters from the Northern region, in the prestigious setting of the Palais Rameau or the Palais des Beaux- Arts in Lille. Teachers or students of the School of Fine Arts, professional painters or amateurs met there once a year to offer their most beautiful creations to the public. As time passed, and despite the success experienced by some, most fell into oblivion.
By reviving the joyful and family atmosphere of the Salon, and by drawing up without prejudice the exhaustive list of artists and their exhibited works, Xavier Labbee offers to his students of the Master "Cultural Heritage Law" of Lille and to art historians, collectors, lovers of heritage, an indispensable instrument to grasp the sensitivity of painters of Lille and its surroundings, which will allow new discoveries. This volume constitutes an essential contribution to the definition of an entire section of the French painter, which flourished as a counterpoint to the avant-garde of the 20th century.
