Since the mid-20th century, the study of war has been the site of a veritable historiographical revolution. The social sciences have broken with a military history focused on 'great battles' and the detailed description of such events. This three-volume work offers a synthesis of the major developments, concepts, debates, and current and future trends in research that has, since the 1950s, transformed military history into a comprehensive history of war. The contributions presented here shed new light on a major social phenomenon in the history of humanity, in a world today where war is still omnipresent. Through specific case studies and broad overviews, the authors propose a reflection on the history of war that combines the disciplines (history, art history, archaeology, law) into a journey that runs from prehistoric times to the 21st century.
The third volume proposes original thematic or methodological approaches to contribute further to the renewal of military history.
