Recent studies, combining art history with building archaeology methods and the new reading of sources, are renewing our knowledge of the religious and monastic architecture of the Central Middle Ages in the northern part of the former ecclesiastical province of Reims (dioceses of Thérouanne, Tournai, Arras and Cambrai).
These monuments, now lost or still present, bear witness to the dynamism of the builders in this vast region, at the crossroads of northern Europe, whether they were rebuilding on existing sites or establishing new settlements, whether canonical or monastic. Trade routes and waterways – of which the Scheldt, the frontier between the Holy Roman Empire and Flanders, was a major axis – favored exchanges and enabled the circulation of materials, accompanied by the transfer of forms and techniques.
