Focusing on suburban phenomena in the territory of Rome and in the provincial context of Gaul, this book brings together the work of French and Italian researchers following in the footsteps of a long tradition of scientific studies on the subject.
Following an introduction addressing the very definition of the suburbium, its essential role in understanding urban archaeology and the complexity of its physical boundaries, the articles are presented along two lines. The first is dedicated to case studies characterised by a mix of functions concentrated in a given territory, and the second deals mainly with the funerary function of these peripheral neighbourhoods.
Whether dealing with specific buildings or larger spaces, these contributions offer sometimes unprecedented insights into the territories covered, adding an important milestone, among other things, to our knowledge of suburban phenomena, thanks to the presentation of the most recent data.
