Since the end of the 20th century, the teaching of history has been affected by new international challenges relating to the diversity of cultures and memories brought about by the presence of minorities in national territories.
Taking a deliberately decentred approach to the French case, this book analyses situations in different historical contexts (Europeanisation, regionalism, post-genocide, post-communism, post-colonial, etc.) in which narrative and minority issues have become particularly acute. From the micro-local (the Gazi district of Istanbul), or regional (South Tyrol), to the national scale (Belgium, Mexico, Romania), it also includes comparisons within Europe (Poland/Central and Eastern European countries; France/Germany) and North America (United States/Canada/Quebec).
Far removed from the polemics over the abandonment of the national narrative that is regularly invoked in France, the book offers an understanding of the transformation of historical imaginations in globalised national societies through the intermediary of the school. These societies often have conflicting pasts, which continue to be the source of political and identity reconstructions.
