Little is known about the financial history of towns under the "Ancien Régime" in France. This book fills this gap in part through an approach that combines an in-depth examination of the accounts of the city of Lille over a century with various instruments and concepts of economic analysis.
Among urban expenditure, particular attention has been paid to the evolution of the heavy royal taxes borne by the city. The abundant revenues generated by the many "octrois" granted to the northern city by successive sovereigns are the subject of meticulous study.
The economic analysis provided answers to key questions such as who bore the burden of taxation. It also enabled us to assess the impact of certain regulations adopted by the city's authorities. A precise diagnosis of the financial health of the city of Lille on the eve of the Revolution was established using standard indicators for the financial analysis of local authorities.
