Since light is traditionally considered immaterial, the association of 'light and matter' is not necessarily self-evident. However, echoing the scientific history that balances corpuscular and undulating light, art transcends its ambiguous complexity through movement and radiation.
Conceived by the Lumière de Spectacle research programme (University of Lille) and the result of a Franco-Italian Colloquium in collaboration with the University of Padua and the Istituto per il Teatro e il Melodramma (Fondazione Cini), this multi-disciplinary work explores the limits and issues involved, bringing together international contributors (France, Italy, Brazil, Belgium).
Artists, lighting designers and academics have pooled their skills and expertise to look at the material and immaterial aspects of light in the performing arts, using historical, aesthetic and contemporary approaches to lighting design.
