Immanent critique refers to an internal and not external critical operation to the criticized object, whether texts, works, practices and institutions, or even societies as a whole. Nowadays, it is most often in relation to social criticism that this concept is discussed, notably by Frankfurt-based critical theory. The essays gathered in this volume focus both on the history of the concept (Hegel, Marx, Benjamin, Adorno) and on the most contemporary discussions of models of social criticism, which require us to start from norms that are socially valid in the societies under criticism (Walzer, Habermas, Honneth).
