What remains of a battle in the place where it took place? Not much, certainly, although the spatial (environmental, monumental) imprint of the great battles of the industrial age is more obvious. Yet, the battle sites of all eras arouse interest, curiosity and sometimes even a real craze. A specific form of tourism has developed, whose roots are older than is often thought. For these visitors, the battlefields bear an irreducible part of the memory of the wars and this memory is increasingly inscribed on the spot through multiple social, cultural, political and educational uses. In this volume, some twenty researchers explore this history of places of remembrance, from the 16th century to the present day. Their articles vary in scale and approach, and will carry the reader from the Italian wars to the Pacific war, and from Quebec to Lorraine, via Portugal or Normandy.
