Since its invention, French cinema has never ceased to trick, create and innovate, pushing back every economic, aesthetic, logistical and narrative frontier with its special effects. By extending the tricks of photography, theatrical enchantment and prestidigitation, pioneers like Georges Méliès drew attention to themselves. Thousands of artists and technicians then worked in the shadows, contributing their discoveries to French cinematographic images throughout its history. Depending on inventions, fashions and socio-economic contexts, tricksters have accompanied French cinema and audiovisual from one century to the next, between craft, DIY and industry. By bringing together different perspectives (historians, lawyers, artists, aesthetic specialists, etc.), this book lifts the veil on the unique art of deception that is French special effects, from yesterday to today.
