The training of clerics was one of the central concerns of the Christian churches in the late Middle Ages and in early modern times. However, historians have mostly considered the issues of vocation, professionalization and the construction of clergymen's identities in isolation from each other.
The studies gathered here aim to show how these aspects are inextricably linked, by examining the directions taken, the resources invested and the mechanisms chosen to preside over the 'making of the clergyman'. All stages of training (initial and continued) are considered, from the point of view of both educators and candidates, allowing us to scrutinize social and spatial mobilities, the imposition of norms, and the emergence of confessional identities (Catholic, Protestant, Orthodox) which, on the one hand, influenced and, on the other hand, competed with each other. The questions raised in this book will, therefore, encourage comparisons between Christian clergies across Europe.
