Summary

In this paper, the authors study the mapping of thematic representations into syntactic configurations in the case of Italian psychological verbs. These verbs share an interesting property: the argument carrying the role of Experiencer is structurally higher than the one carrying the role of Theme, in aIl cases. This strongly suggests, according to the authors, the existence of a principled generalization in terms of a thematic hierarchy constraining the formation of D-structures from θ-grids. Furthermore, the hypothesis about the derived nature of the (superficial) subject has sorne far reaching consequences for the theory of Binding, which are studied in detail in this article.
