Summary

ln modern French, apocope (réac for réactionnaire, intro for introduction) is govemed not only by constraints relating to prosodie phonology, but also by certain morphological tendencies, which can be convergent or divergent, e.g. violations of the leamed stucture of certain constructed words, preservation of morphological constituents, and reconstruction operations, especially involving expressive endings. A study of the strategies adopted in apocopes for deverbal nouns in -ion gives insight into the importance of these tendencies : preservation of the root of the base verb in these nouns (administre for administration, cotise for cotisation, mute for mutation; i.e. a sort ofback-formation retuming to the root of the verbal base) or selection of expressive endings (revalo for revalorisation), both strategies being conjoined in certain cases (provoque for provocation).
