The class enemy on the screen: FRG seen by GDR

For the 40 years it lasted, the GDR has seen its faceoff with the FRG as a core issue as well as a media problem. The image of the class enemy was used as a negative-foil to legitimate the GDR, then presented as a "better Germany", capable of learning the lessons from the past.

But how can you expose capitalism without fostering the public’s fascination for such an appealing (sensual) media as moving pictures? This article will present the major themes on the subject and explain how the strategies to represent the FRG evolved in time on GDR’s television and film screens from 1949 to the fall of the Berlin Wall.
