Résumé

Depuis le XVIII^e siècle, la signification de littérature subit une double transformation : apparition, à côté des sens archaïques de "science", "érudition", de celui de "production d'objets discursifs" (dits eux-mêmes aussi déjà littérature) et restriction du domaine d'exercice de cette connaissance et/ou production aux objets langagiers dotés d'une dimension artistique. On se trompe grandement si on croit le sens ancien de "culture" rapidement abandonné et si on imagine la restriction à l'esthétique comme autre chose que l'utilisation, à des fins idéologiques diverses, des tensions inhérentes à une notion floue, entité plus fonctionnelle que structurale.

Summary

Since the XVIII^th century, the meaning of literature is submitted to a double transformation : beside the ancient meanings of "science" and "erudition", emerges the new meaning of "discourse objects production", more specifically restricted to the strictly delimited field of science and production of discourse objects having an artistic dimension. It would be a mistake to believe that the ancient meaning of "culture" is rapidly put away and to see the confinement of literature into aesthetic field otherwise than the use, for ideological goals, of internaI tensions of a vague notion whose being is more functional than structural.
