Son originalité consiste à inscrire dans la longue durée une analyse sociale et culturelle des rituels et cérémonies de cour, souvent envisagés selon un formalisme désincarné. L&#8217;ouvrage étudie ainsi les cadres spatiaux, les acteurs et les mises en scène qui fondent les cérémonies de cour. Il porte sur les États européens à travers des cours très diverses, impériales, pontificales, royales et princières. Il montre que les rituels de cour doivent être compris à différentes échelles spatiales, entourent les détenteurs du pouvoir d&#8217;acteurs spécifiques et finalement mettent en scène la légitimité des souverains.
