Summary

The de-/des- prefixes are, in the history of French, traditionally distinguished as two prefixes, the reflexes of Latin de- and dis- respectively. It is shown that this distinction, although it has been questioned because of overlappings, is to be maintained. The present paper further advocates that a third prefix be added with de- + ex- as etymon. The data collected, on which the discussion is based, are all from Middle French.
