Summary

This article aims at providing a general frame of analysis for qu- words in French (and analogous items in other languages, like wh- words in English). It first gives a brief survey of available traditions: grammatical, historical (mainly about Indo-European, with an extension to "Eurasiatic"), typological tradition, fonnal approaches. It then sets up a general deductive model (consistant with data from language evolution and typology) linking interrogation, indefinition and subordination through various stages, and taking the notion of variable as a startpoint. In the last part of the article, French qu- words are considered again, and their various types of use are put in relation with the general model.
