The american exile of the great philosopher T. W. Adorno has been the setting of an interesting case of confrontation between two different intellectual traditions. Well-known for his speculative works about music, the german thinker had to consider the rise of mass-media and popullar culture. Leaving Germany in 1934, he moved in the Unites States, in New York, in the early 1940’ and could then join in Princeton the sociological team of P. L. Lazarsfeld, which worked on broadcast reception. Altough this collaboration ended with a mutual incomprehension, it gives and idea of what could have been the union of the main issues of the Franfurter School’s Critical Theory and the methods of a more empirical américan sociology.
