Summary

Quotations for the entry Dieu used by French dictionaries from Trévoux (1771) to Petit Robert (1991) are examined in this paper. The material is classified with regard to the dates, whether or not they are literary quotations, the catholic or non catholic content, and the way the texts are inserted in the entry. Thus, we try to explain the greater or lesser religious conformism of the dictionaries : why, for instance, the catholic lexicographers of Trévoux present a range of quotations which are less normative than the positivist Littré.
