L'enseignement supérieur est, pour la Troisième République, un enjeu important. Il doit à la fois faire progresser les connaissances humaines, former les futurs enseignants mais aussi diffuser les valeurs républicaines dans la jeunesse. L'étude de l'installation et du développement de la faculté des Lettres de Lille permet de saisir l'ampleur de la rénovation des structures universitaires après 1880 tout en décrivant le travail quotidien d'une faculté provinciale sur la longue durée. Elle permet également une première approche du rôle des élites culturelles septentrionales dans une région très marquée par les guerres mondiales.

In May 1920, on the occasion of an International Exhibition for the Renaissance of the liberated regions, Georges Lyon Lille chief education officer, asked the teachers to reply to a questionnaire and asked the pupils to write an essay about their memories at war and a narrative dramatic experience they could have been watching as well.
