L'irrationnel se définit moins qu'il ne se décline, en fonction de sa relation avec son autre, guère plus absolu: la raison. Quelques-uns de ses cas, quelques-unes de ses figures, qui amènent à remettre en cause des frontières trop franches, sont proposés ici. Comment comprendre l'ancrage persistant des physiciens Parménide et Empédocle dans les religions à mystères ou le chamanisme ? L'expérience délirante que fait du divin le héros des Bacchantes d'Euripide ne traduit-elle pas les limites d'une raison humaine qui ne peut jamais avoir le dernier mot ? À un autre niveau, l'alchimie classique, quand elle se dit hermétique, ne peut pas être confondue avec ce qu'en fait l'ésotérisme du XIXe siècle. Il y a enfin ces figures incarnées de l'irrationnel. Non seulement le fou, mais aussi la femme, l'enfant, le primitif. Le concept de « dégénérescence » alliera, dans la psychiatrie et la criminologie du XIXe, toutes ces prétendues formes de l'anormalité, préparant ainsi peu à peu son renversement à venir, le dépassement de la raison ordinaire dans la figure de l'artiste. C'est précisément à ce destin que le surréalisme voue le primitif, jusqu'à la contradiction qu'il y a à reconstruire une authenticité et une spontanéité perdues. Il faut ajouter le mystique à cette liste, qui, au sein de trois approches différentes (Lévy-Bruhl, Bergson, Bataille), apparaît comme le terrain d'une expérience où la raison joue avec son autre.
